The 5 key benefits of Anodised Aluminium

What is Anodising?

Anodising aluminium is a highly controlled form of oxidation. First the aluminium is first cleaned, to remove any oils on the surface from extrusion, next it is etched in acid to remove imperfections and then anodised in sulphuric acid in an electrochemical process. This process is achieved by immersing the aluminium in an acid electrolyte bath and passing an electric current through the medium. The resulting anodic oxide structure is fully integrated through the aluminium substrate allowing for a porous final product that can be dyed and sealed or painted for a rich, deep finish which is highly durable, corrosion resistant and suitable for a plethora of applications.

5 key benefits of anodised aluminium

  1. Surface finish

The anodised aluminium is able to give a deep, rich final surface finish which is totally uniform and regular, easy to maintain and easy to clean with a simple cloth and soap. Additionally, it is resistant to abrasion so maintains its look consistently.

  1. Corrosion resistant

The finished anodised aluminium has a perfectly formed and scientifically controlled oxide layer which is strong and durable. The result is extremely hard and won’t flake or peel, and colour added by dyeing in the final sealing stages won’t fade. Unlike other metals, it isn’t susceptible to rust.

  1. Appearance

Before the sealing process, it is possible to add colour while the metal is porous after the anodising procedure, and the final, sealed metal will keep its sheen, lustre and feel without chipping, peeling or fading. The porous unsealed metal is also an ideal primer base for painting, creating the ideal surface finish. When aluminium has had an anodising treatment and finish, it has a rich, deep appearance which lasts and is easy to keep looking fresh.

  1. Insulation properties

Aluminium oxide is not a good conductor of electricity, making the metal an ideal insulator. The film on the surface of the aluminium substrates not only is non-conductive, but it also protects the metal against wear. Another benefit of the coating process is that it can operate up to extremely high temperatures, making it superior to other metal options.

  1. Environmentally Friendly

Impact on the environment is something that needs to be factored in nowadays and the good news for those using anodised aluminium is it has positive environmental factors. The production processes are eco-friendly as they don’t produce CO2 or solvent emissions. Also worth mentioning is that anodised aluminium is 100% recyclable, as it can be re-melted and reused with a fraction of the energy required for the production of new aluminium.
