An In-Depth Look at Custom Aluminium Profiles and Their Applications

Custom aluminium profiles are created with the use of a process known as extrusion, whereby heated aluminium is pressed, with high force, through a fixed shape die, almost like running Play-Doh through a shaped press. This is how all extrusions are made, except with custom aluminium parts the dies used are completely bespoke, allowing for the creation of unique parts for specialised applications.

There are many industries that require bespoke aluminium extrusion, including construction and a variety of manufacturing branches such as medical equipment.

What Are Custom Aluminium Profiles?

Custom aluminium profiles are created with the use of specially manufactured dies, allowing for the production of completely unique shapes for specialised applications. At LA Metals, we not only stock large quantities of standard extrusions, but we also offer services to create custom aluminium parts as well as an aluminium profile guide.

We have more than 30 years of experience in the aluminium trade and offer a thorough understanding of the material as well as the latest equipment, helping us to advise on and produce the highest quality parts available.

Definition and Characteristics

With our bespoke aluminium extrusion services, we can provide custom-shaped profiles suitable for a huge range of applications, this is in addition to our base stock options including aluminium square box sections and round tubes.

Customisation Options

Every aspect of your extrusion can be created completely customised. Not only can you request a specific shape for your custom aluminium extrusion, but you can also specify lengths as well as finishes and any unique features you need, all tailored to suit your application.

All extrusions will be hardened, but any good aluminium extrusion supplier should be able to offer a range of high-quality finishes, including powder coating, anodising and polishing.

On top of the benefits of powder coating aluminium or having it anodised or polished, thanks to the amazing material properties of aluminium, your range of potential options is almost limitless.

Extrusion Process for Custom Aluminium Profiles

The process of creating custom aluminium profiles involves the design and production of a unique die, which your chosen grade of aluminium is then pressed through at high temperature and with great force – often equated to an industrial Play-Doh press. The end result is a bespoke aluminium extrusion, created just for you to your specifications.

Your custom aluminium extrusion is then hardened and can be finished according to your needs, using powder coating, anodising, or polishing.

Materials

Custom aluminium profiles can be supplied in a number of grades of aluminium, with most being in the 6000 series, which is commonly used for industrial applications. At LA Metals, we stock a range of 6000 series aluminium grades, including 6063 and 6082, but there are more.

Aluminium grades range from series 1000, which is a minimum of 99% pure aluminium, to series 7000, which is an aluminium alloyed with zinc, making a very strong product. The series numbers, 1000, 2000 and so on, don’t denote strength or quality, only the type of minerals or other metals that the aluminium is alloyed with.

The 6000 grade aluminium that we stock is alloyed with magnesium and silicon, producing a metal that is nicely workable, while providing excellent strength and corrosion resistance. For custom extrusions, we can work with whichever grade of aluminium best suits your needs.

Applications of Custom Aluminium Profiles

Custom aluminium extrusions are used across a vast range of industries and applications:

  • Medical equipment
  • Windows and doors
  • Structural building components
  • Nautical construction
  • Furniture
  • Railways
  • Automotive applications
  • Roofing
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Storage tanks

Advantages of Custom Aluminium Profiles

Custom aluminium extrusion has a number of advantages compared with using stock extrusions. Extrusion is a very consistent and precise process in any case and using it to create your own custom profiles allows you to tap into these benefits, including when adding your own specific features. You can be sure of precise measurements every time, making custom aluminium profiles ideal for high-tolerance applications.

With custom aluminium extrusion, cost efficiencies can also be quite considerable. Rather than spending time and energy modifying existing extrusions to fit your needs, using bespoke profiles allows you to use, and pay for, exactly the amount of material you need, no more and no less.
